Washington state is the northwestern-most state in the United States. It has a diverse climate in different regions of the state. The coastal mountains have extremely high rainfall, temperate rainforests, and a very moderate climate. On the eastern side of the mountains, the rain shadow leads to desert which is highly variable in temperature. Because the coastal area is the most populated area of the state, Washington is widely associated with the wet, moderate climate of the coastal areas.

Washington State, together with Oregon, is important in production of herbs, including peppermint and other kinds of mint.
